My ancestor moved from Port Hope, Canada West to Walworth Co., Wisconsin sometime between 1856 and June of 1858. What routes and modes of travel might they have used?

I know that trains were running between Canada and US at that time. Other than walking or horse power; I would assume that this was probably their best mode of travel
