My ancestor moved from Port Hope, Canada West to Walworth Co., Wisconsin sometime between 1856 and June of 1858. What routes and modes of travel might they have used?

My 3rd Great Grandfather, Able Jay Hubble left Connecticut and settled in Cramahe sometime before 1819. In winter of 1844 his daughter Mary and her husband Elias Williams made a 300 mile trip Michigan. Her father and some of her siblings followed. I am wondering: Why would someone move from Connecticut to Cramahe and then why brave a winter trip to Michigan? In other words, what was the draw to Ontario and then what made them leave? I'm sure there are many possible reasons, but was there some historical or political reason for such migrations?

My great grandparents were Samuel May and Jane Sullivan. At one time, they resided in Renfrew County. Most of their children were born in the area, including my grandfather John Francis May. They also had a daughter named Margaret May. She was born on June 5 1877 and died in 1973. She is buried in Eganville. The story goes that my great-aunt Maggie married money. She married her husband Michael Roche June 17 1902 in Brudenell. During her life, she was said to have either built or contributed significantly to the building of a church in the Renfrew area. When I was a child, we toured the small town and have pictures of the church, but I do not have the name or exact location. Are you familiar with this church? It is quite large with grey brick and has a statue (shrine) on the grounds and something about stables. Any idea where that might have been as we are planning a visit to the area and would like to visit.

When my birth mother married my father in 1974 he adopted me. This was a legal adoption and my name was changed. I was born in the US. My parents recall the lawyer saying that I would have Dual Citizenship. Would it have been part of the adoption process in the early seventies to confirm my Canadian Status? How could I obtain a copy of the Adoption act that covers that time period?

Apparently, my grandfather changed his name from Carter to Smith before he got married. Where do I search for this information? The name change would have taken place sometime after 1885 but before the 1st WW.

Does anyone have info on where were the passenger ports in southwest Ontario that took immigrants/emigrants (who had taken a train from Toronto, instead of going through Lake Erie) from Lake Huron to Chicago in the 1880's? For example, were cities like Kincardine, Goderich, or Southhampton passenger ports? What passenger ships departed from these Ontario ports and how long did it take to get to Chicago.
